The first mantra of the oldest yogic text – the Rig Veda – tells us that life begins with Fire (Agni). In the Vedas, Agni represents all concepts of spiritual energy that permeates everything in the universe. In the Upanishads, Agni becomes any energy or knowledge that dispels a state of darkness, that transforms and creates an enlightened state of existence.
This email is all about the Fire Element and the Astrological signs ruled by this element: Aires, Leo and Sagittarius. We are going to explore this element in depth on our Astrology and Yoga Retreat coming up soon Sat 17/10 – Sun 18/10 . And come and join us! We are filling fast and in the world of yoga, these opportunities are fleeting.
We all know a Fire Sign. Aires – bold, competitive and direct. Fast-moving energy that can get frustrated easily. Sometimes bossy, impulsive and their egos can get in the way. A Leo on a good day – confident, creative, loyal, and generous. Leos radiate warmth and a natural charisma. They can also be drama queens which often masks a deep vulnerability. Sagittarius – curious, adventurous, philosophical. Big worldviews and lovers of freedom. They can also be flighty and never finish a task, feeling suffocated by deadlines and rules.
A happy Fire Sign could be described as passionate, exciting and powerful. The element we hold in the third chakra, manipura, is the element of fire. When the third chakra is balanced, we are in our power. Manipura governs self-esteem, willpower, confidence, and the energy of transformation. It controls metabolism, digestion, and the organs of the stomach, pancreas, liver, and adrenals. When your third chakra is imbalanced you suffer from low self-esteem, chronic fatigue, feeling powerless, procrastination and digestive issues.
In Elemental Yoga we would work with the Fire element using strong pranayama, Sun Salutes, Tantric Kriyas like Tibetan Light Yoga and a Vedic Fire Ceremony. Astrologically, the element of Fire is ruled by the Sun and Mars. The third chakra governs identity, vitality, ambition, passion, courage and leadership and these qualities directly mirror the astrological traits of the Sun (your core identity, ego, life force, and conscious will) and Mars (action, drive, energy, and passion, representing how you assert yourself and pursue your goals).
Fire signs need active inspiration, personal freedom, and meaningful challenges to feel truly happy. Stagnation kills their spirit and they need bold goals to chase. They find meaning in careers where they can lead, inspire, command, share big ideas and connect to people. The core emotion driving the fire signs is passion. Unlike water signs (which are rooted in deep, flowing feelings like empathy) or earth signs (rooted in stability), fire signs process emotion as an immediate, high-energy impulse. Their emotional world acts fast, burns hot, and moves quickly into action rather than quiet reflection.
A fire sign in crisis can look like a sudden, volatile explosion of erratic energy, aggressive defensiveness, or a complete, frantic scattering of focus. Minor stress becomes full-scale dramatic fury. A prolonged crisis can lead to a total breakdown where the spark completely goes out, leaving behind chronic fatigue, apathy or hopelessness.
Why is this all so interesting? Well one of the ideas I promote in my yoga classes is for my students to develop knowledge of self. Once you start to know yourself, including your Astrological Element, you start to understand others. A big, bossy fire sign could, unchecked, boil away a sensitive water sign. Or that same water sign could smother fire’s spark. However, with self-knowledge and balanced maturely, they create warm steam—supplying inspiration and emotional grounding to each other.
In Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy the development of the will is the foundation for human action, moral strength, and freedom. Humans think with their heads, feel with their hearts and manifest (will) with their hands. In astrology, the fire signs represent the evolutionary stages of human willpower, moving from an instinctive burst of energy (Aires, I am) to a focused ego (Leo, I will) and finally to a universal vision (Sagittarius, I see).
Our current world needs the spark and the will of the Fire signs to shake up entrenched systems, ideas and ideologies that no longer serve Mother Earth. These are people who forge their own paths and work towards big, bold ideas. You cannot develop the will without standing in your truth and these are the astrological signs that, when in their power, move through life in Truth. A wonderful complement and balance to the Builders (Earth signs) and the Emotional Connectors (Water signs). Fire signs teach us that anything is possible if you develop your will. Next week – Air Signs. Love and namaste Margot
