This post is all about Akasha or the Ether Element. The most fascinating of all the Elements, all Astrological signs are affected by the Akasha element. We are going to explore Akasha in depth on our Astrology and Yoga Retreat coming up soon Sat 17/10 – Sun 18/10
While the four gross elements (earth, water, fire, air) are mapped directly to the 12 zodiac signs in triplicities, Akasha is not assigned to any single sign. Instead, it serves as the underlying background or subtle energetic field of the chart. Akasha represents pure potentiality, expansiveness and the void. It represents space, consciousness, and spirituality. At both the physical and emotional level, it is the balance between holding on and letting go. It is the container for all other elements and is related to the subtle energy channels in the body. Its essence is emptiness.
Akasha governs the sense of sound, the ears and the throat chakra (Vishuddhi). It is also connected with consciousness and with the gaps between things rather than the things themselves. In the body, those gaps are obvious: the hollow of the ear canal, the cavities of the skull and chest, and the space within and between cells. In life, these are the moments of profound aloneness and silence, where we truly experience ourselves.
It’s also the element most of us avoid. This emptiness can confront us at odd moments, and when it does most people panic and try to fill it. More activity, more plans, more work. Some of us meet it right after a big push, when the thing we were chasing is done and the quiet underneath it is still there. The void is scary; hence we fill it and distract ourselves. When you dip into the void, and we do so a lot in yoga class, you will be faced with yourself.
We all know someone who avoids Akasha, where mindfulness and self-reflection bring up sadness and overwhelm. The compulsive talker, the need for background noise, dismissing the quiet moments in yoga class as unwanted spiritual practices whereas all they want is bend and stretch, the packed schedule, because constant motion acts as an emotional shield and a badge of honour in a society that values busyness. Learning to live in the void is one of the great achievements of this lifetime. It’s in the void where we can tap into true wisdom.
Jupiter embodies the Akasha element. Jupiter signifies expansion, higher wisdom, grace, and the proliferation of cells, knowledge, or abundance. Jupiter enlarges everything it touches, magnifying your optimism, faith, and desire for higher learning.
An excess of Akasha in the mind or body, could manifest as ungroundedness, anxiety, overwhelm, or detachment from physical reality. Deficiency in Akasha results in rigidity, restriction, gullibility, lack of curiosity and an inability to tap into your own intuition.
A balanced Akasha element allows us to feel connected, secure, supported, loved, understood, and still. We are subtle and spiritually aware. We are connected to the knowledge of our higher selves and the Divine. We are wise and creative. We speak freely and communicate with clarity.
Why is this interesting? Well, Akasha is the container of your own mind. You express the 5 Astrological Elements through Akasha. Developing Akasha through meditation, silence and mindfulness allows you to step into the role of the Witness, shifting from the narrow, personal Ego to a broader cosmic perspective. In this state, you recognize that, in this lifetime, you are not the temporary storm of a difficult astrological chart or a planetary transit; no – you are the vast, untouchable sky (Akasha) in which the planets move.
Amazing stuff. This will be a brilliant Retreat!
